Friday 21st September - Eiffel Tower

Today I didn't take my umbrella or Finbarr's spray jacket with me because it was a beautiful sunny morning, so of course by midday, when we were halfway up the Eiffel Tower, the rain started! It was the first day we've had rain so we weren't really upset, and it didn't stop us. Peggy and Tink decided on a shopping day (they've done the tourist things in Paris before), so the Powers decided to go up the Eiffel Tower, to the Arc De Triomphe and down the Champs Elysee. We all loved the view from the Eiffel Tower, though we could only go half way up as the top part was closed. We wandered around and by chance came across the tunnel where Princess Diana was killed (many flowers were around the memorial at the top of the tunnel (not a Diana memorial, but for the centenary of the founding of the Herald Tribune - English newspaper - ironically!). After lunch and a sit down to rest weary legs, we moved on to the Arc De Triomphe - commissioned by Napolean in 1806 but he never saw it completed. His remains were taken through the arch on the way to his final resting place in Les Invalides - where the military museum of Paris is. We also saw the tomb of the unknown soldier under the monument.
We then walked down the most famous boulevard of Paris - the Champs Elysee - not so pretty in the rain, but the shops were a welcome break so we had a bit of a shop (some) and a major shop (Damian), who bought a pair of Gucci shoes from Avenue Montaigne. The funny thing is, we were all wet, but Damian's shoe bag was so posh it had it's own little raincoat- hilarious!!

After that big purchase, we went home and Damian and I got ready for our very exciting night out at Alain Ducasse...
