Saturday 22nd September

Today was a lovely day for wandering the streets of St Germain. Damian and Tink decided to go the food markets and find goodies for dinner, while Peggy, the kids and I made our way to St Germain.  At first we found the very touristy spots - not so nice, and then we got further into the intresting areas. We really enjoyed wandering around and seeing the university buildings, great shops and homes of Parisians in the Latin Quarter. We found a lovely shop for lunch sandwiches and salads and made our way to Luxembourg Gardens for a picnic lunch. Such a pretty spot, though Finbarr was not impressed that he couldn't run all over the beautiful green grassy areas.  An octagonal pond had lots of toy sailing boats which children pushed off with long poles - there was even a pirate ship! Men and women play bouchée in another part of the park and Alice did her best to statue-hop and try to find the statue of Marie Antoniette (no luck though).  We then realised how lucky we are in Australia to have free playgrounds everywhere you go. It cost 7.50 euro for the 3 children to go into the playground (!!) but they were happy they went - there was a really fun flying fox that they kept lining up for and lots of other fun things to do. Finbarr was excited he found chestnuts fallen from trees - we could have had a feast.

We kept walking and found Le Bon Marche - Paris' oldest department store (and some believe the world's oldest).  It was an impressive store - every very expensive label you could think of - perhaps some of last night's diners shop here?!  Did you know there was such a thing as "Baby Dior"? I decided not to buy Alice a Chloe dress for 690 euro (about $856), only because it was a bit short! The food hall was amazing so we bought a few cheeses for after dinner.  A quick stop for treats at a delightful patisserie on the way home and we arrived home to beautiful roasted chickens, and vegetables including white asparagus thanks to chefs Damian and Tink.  Another happy day in Paris!
